For some reason I thought they were bigger. My Sonic actually looks slightly bigger
The numbers are actually pretty close. The interiors are similar, the Mazda is slightly wider. Overall it's longer, but the Sonic actually has more cargo volume and weighs about 200lbs less
Here's the Mazda's dimensions:
And here's the Sonic
Also, and I hate to say it, the new Mazda 3 hatch looks far worse in person than in pictures. The front is alright but the back is pretty ugly in my opinion. The interior looks nice, but overall I think this was a huge swing and miss by Mazda. The sedan is better looking.
All that said though, a new speed 3 with this small hatch would be pretty friggin amazing.

Yes!!! I saw he hatch in person and was very disappointed. I hate to say it but the sedan looked better IMO.
The hatch was awkward in the rear.

The front 3/4 view does it the most justice in the HNNNGGG department.

The rear looks unfinished. It's like they had an idea, mocked it up, and before they could refine it they started building them

Yes it looks great from that angle, but side and back it's just not very good

I actually think the opposite. The back looks good to me, but the front looks like a squirrel, or it has a goddamn overbite.
I had one of the old ones back when I lived in Des Moines. I have to credit it with teaching me what a good car is. It's the most enthusiast car you can buy as a non-enthusiast.
But then Ford gave us the European Focus, and it looks better. Might not be as good on the inside, but it looks better.

I can look past the hatch for 40 mpg and a manual, and steel wheels, and under 20k
